R2-D2 droid used in the original Star Wars movies

A complete R2-D2 unit assembled from parts used throughout the filming of the original Star Wars trilogy and the first two prequels sold at auction for $2.76 million Wednesday.

The Calabasas, California-based auction house Profiles in History confirmed the sale to EW.

Constructed of aluminum, steel, and fiberglass elements, the droid measures 43 x 29.5 x 20 inches and was pieced together over the years from original components used in Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones.

The auction house had previously estimated the R2 unit could sell for between $1 million and $2 million. Information about the buyer was not disclosed.
